I’ve seen sites with headers that can take up a third or even half of the screen. Obviously, this is way too large. It pushes the rest of the site down and makes the whole page feel crowded.
Headers are nearly page-wide, but not very tall. Make sure you keep this in mind when designing your page. A common guideline is to not make your header more than 200-300 pixels tall. Your header serves as exactly that, the head of your page. Make sure it does that, but not more than that.
